Why I Specialise in Estate Planning for SEND Families

Estate planning can feel overwhelming for any family. But when you are raising a child with additional needs, the questions can feel much bigger.

Who will understand them? Who will speak up for them? Who will manage money on their behalf? Will an inheritance affect the benefits or support they rely on?

And perhaps the hardest question of all: what will happen when I am no longer here?

These are not easy things to think about. I know that because I am not only an estate planning consultant. I am also a SEND parent.

This Work Is Personal to Me

My son Ethan has Williams Syndrome.

Like many parents of a child with additional needs, I spend a great deal of time thinking ahead. Not just to next week or next year, but much further into the future.

I think about the support he may need as he grows older, the people who will surround him and how we can help him live a happy, safe and fulfilling life.

I also understand how exhausting it can be to constantly fight for the right education, support and opportunities for your child. SEND parents often become experts, advocates, administrators and coordinators without ever choosing those roles.

We hold so much information in our heads. We understand our child's routines, communication, anxieties, medical needs, strengths and vulnerabilities. We often become the person who joins all the dots.

That is why planning for the future can feel frightening. It is not simply about leaving money behind. It is about making sure the right people understand your child and have the legal tools, guidance and authority to support them.

SEND Families Often Need More Than a Basic Will

A Will is an important starting point, but for many SEND families it is only one part of the protection plan.

A standard Will may not properly address questions such as:

• Whether a direct inheritance could affect means-tested benefits.
• Who should manage money for a vulnerable beneficiary.
• Who should act as guardian for a younger child.
• Who can be trusted to make long-term decisions.
• Whether a trust may offer greater protection and flexibility.
• How family members can be guided through a letter of wishes.
• What happens if a parent loses mental capacity during their lifetime.

Without careful planning, money may pass directly to a child who is unable to manage it safely. It may affect financial support they receive, expose them to exploitation or place responsibility on someone who is not ready to deal with it.

Good estate planning is not about assuming the worst. It is about creating a structure around your family so that the people you love are supported, whatever happens.

I Want Families to Feel Understood

SEND families do not need more jargon, pressure or complicated explanations. They need someone who will listen. Someone who understands that every child is different. Someone who appreciates that discussing death, capacity and future care can feel emotional.

And someone who can explain the options in plain English, without making families feel rushed into decisions.

My role is not to tell parents what they should do. It is to help them understand the risks, consider the people involved and put a plan in place that reflects their own family.

Planning Is an Act of Love

Many parents put estate planning off because it feels too difficult to face. I completely understand that. But planning does not mean you are expecting something bad to happen.

It means you are making sure your child will continue to be understood, supported and protected.

For me, this work is not simply about documents — it is about people.

It is about helping SEND families turn fear into a plan, uncertainty into protection and worry into greater peace of mind.

Because our children deserve more than an inheritance. They deserve a future that has been carefully thought about.
